ABOUT MAURITIUSMap

The island of Mauritius is located in the South West Indian Ocean, some 900km east of Madagascar. A popular holiday destination, it is well known for its beautiful beaches and luxury hotels. Roughly the same size as Surrey in England, Mauritius is a democratic republic with a population of approximately 1.25 million. It is the only known home of the now extinct Dodo.

Climate: Mauritius is in general perennially warm. Summer from November to May, with Midsummer in January/ February with temperatures of around 31o Celsius on the Coast and 25o on the central plateau. Winter is from May to November with midday temperatures of 25o Celsius on the Coast and cooler evenings. The months of highest rainfall are January to March. Cyclone season is from November to May, of which the most recent were Hollanda (1998) and Dina (2002). The North of the island is more arid and enjoys more sunshine and less rainfall than other areas.

The Mauritian winter is generally as warm and dry as English summer would be if we got one...
